The key to survival in the industry rely on technical innovation, which also represents as the driving force for keeping longevity of business. 
Hanergy has attached great importance to investing in thin-film solar cell research. Six R&D centers have been established by Hanergy in Beijing, Sichuan, Silicone Valley of the US, and Uppsala, Sweden.
So far, Hanergy has applied for almost 1000 patents in new energy, out of which 60% are invention patents (including core patents from the acquired overseas companies). It has also been the chief developer or involved in the development of more than 10 national and industry standards on photovoltaics. The technological muscle of the corporation is also shown by its title of “National Hi-tech Company” and owning a Post-doctoral Research Center in the group.

        

On April 18, 2011, Hanergy signed a contract to build its state-of-the-art Global Research and Development Center on a 67-hectare (165-acre) estate in the Yanjiao High Technology Development Zone near Beijing. When completed, the center will be one of the world's leading low-carbon scientific research centers.

On July 22nd, 2013, Guangdong Hanergy Solar PV Co., Ltd. was recognized by Department of Science and Technology of Guangdong Province as the first batch of national hi-tech enterprises of the province in 2013. Hanergy’s Heyuan PV Research and manufacturing Base under Hanergy’s Guangdong branch was established at Heyuan Hi-tech Development Zone in 2009 and it was listed as one of key construction projects from 2010 and 2011 and one of the strategic emerging industry projects of Guangdong top 500 companies.
